The Ontario Provincial Police Association (OPPA) came into existence in 1954 and is the sole bargaining agent for approximately 3,600 civilian and 6,200 non-commissioned uniform members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). These committed and well-trained members provide effective (and cost-effective) policing services to 324 Ontario communities who work hard every day to keep these communities safe, healthy and prosperous. The OPPA represent members’ interests in negotiations with provincial government, promote healthy and safe work environments and advocate for better tools, equipment and support for these members.

The OPPA is looking to add a Legal Officer to join its team in Barrie. In this role, you will oversee the management and resolution of labour issues, grievances, arbitrations, negotiations, and other legal issues impacting OPPA members. You will work collaboratively with the entire OPPA team to ensure exceptional member service is prioritized and achieved at all times. Duties may include, but not be limited to: remaining informed of relevant case law, issues and legislation; reviewing and recommending changes to the relevant legislation; drafting, reviewing and advising on contracts, leases, or other agreements, as required; attending Annual General and Special General Meetings of the members of the Association; providing professional legal opinions and advice to the CAO and Board of Directors, as requested.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of labour law experience gained from a leading law firm or in-house environment. Working knowledge of relevant legislation and common law and a desire to maintain this knowledge by attending seminars, conferences, and related courses is essential. Experience before the Courts, administrative boards, or tribunals will be considered an asset.
