RioCan is one of Canada’s largest real estate investment trusts with a total enterprise value of approximately $14.3 billion as at June 30, 2019. RioCan owns, manages and develops retail-focused, increasingly mixed-use properties located in prime, high-density transit-oriented areas where Canadians want to shop, live and work. As at June 30, 2019, RioCan’s portfolio is comprised of 230 properties with an aggregate net leasable area of approximately 39.1 million square feet, including residential rental and 13 development properties. RioCan is currently seeking a Junior Corporate/Commercial Lawyer to join its high caliber team as Legal Counsel. Reporting to the Senior Director, Legal, this position is responsible for providing timely, actionable advice to internal clients on a wide variety of commercial, real estate and construction matters as well as corporate initiatives. The successful candidate will be exposed to a variety of work including: drafting, negotiating and interpreting commercial agreements including leases; advising on a range of strategic initiatives including new development projects and strategic partnerships; advising on regulatory, risk and compliance matters; managing litigation; assisting with the development of organizational policies; and managing external counsel.
The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of experience gained from a leading law firm or major organization. While commercial real estate experience would be considered a strong asset, it is not mandatory for this role. Exceptional negotiating and drafting skills, an ability to deliver sound and decisive advice in a fast-paced environment, and strong relationship-building and communication skills are a must. This is a great opportunity for a junior lawyer to join a talented legal team and build their career with a leading and evolving real estate company.
