The Hamilton Police Association (the “HPA”) consists of nearly 1,200 members (sworn officers and civilian members) of the Hamilton Police Service. As a labour organization, they are responsible for collective bargaining and administering labour contracts on behalf of their members. Dedicated to protecting their members by ensuring they have a healthy and safe work environment, their ultimate aim is “to serve those who bravely serve” the Hamilton community.
The HPA is seeking a Mid-Level Labour Relations Lawyer to join the Hamilton office as their inaugural Legal Counsel. Reporting to the Administrator of the Association and working closely with the President and Board of Directors, the successful candidate will enjoy an excellent variety of work, including, but not be limited to: assisting the Administrator in the preparation and presentation of bargaining issues for negotiations of the Police Service Board; assisting with the negotiation and administration of the collective agreements and other contracts; assisting with preparation of materials for conciliation and interest arbitration; representing members with respect to complaints and alleged violations of the collective agreement and assisting members through all steps of the grievances process; representing police members at formal hearings; attending meetings of the Police Association of Ontario, the Canadian Police Association; and other day to day operations required by the Administrator, President or Board.
The ideal candidate will have 7-10 years of post-call experience in labour relations gained from a reputable law firm, company or administrative board or tribunal. The HPA is seeking someone with exceptional interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills. Experience with collective bargaining in the public sector, knowledge of applicable legislation and familiarity with the Police Services Act of Ontario would all be considered assets. This is an opportunity to work in a dynamic and collegial environment that offers balance and predictability.
